Rail services are returning to normal following major disruptions due to a security alert at Connolly Station in Dublin early this morning.

The alert was triggered after staff discovered a suspicious package on the track at 3am.

Shortly after 5am an Army bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion; the package turned out to be an "elaborate hoax" with no explosive content. The package was removed by the gardaí for examination.

Iarnrod Eireann said rail and Dart services were now running normally.

"The Dart and the northern commuter line pretty much got back to normal right away, and the Maynooth line was running from about 7.20am onwards," he said.

A Garda spokesman said an investigation would be undertaken and that officers would examine CCTV at the station.
