Iarnrod Eireann will "provide recompense" to passengers left without train services for the past six days as a result of a landslide in south Co Dublin.

Up to 10,000 passengers are affected by the landslide near Whiterock in Killiney which has prevented intercity and suburban trains travelling from Rosslare and Arklow to Dublin, as well as DART services travelling from Greystones to Dublin.

Mr Barry Kenny, Iarnrod Eireann's media and public relations manager, said services would not be restored before the weekend. "A team of over 50 people are working around the clock to stabilise an embankment to prevent further landslides," he said.

"Bus transfers are provided for passengers on the Rosslare intercity and Arklow suburban routes but we are simply not in a position to provide alternative transport for DART customers."

He said he appreciated customers had been inconvenienced and those who had purchased monthly travel passes would be refunded. There would also be recompense for other passengers but the details had yet to be worked out.
