The five-part series, Death of an Empire, was presented on RTÉ Radio in January by retired international editor and Moscow correspondent of The Irish Times Séamus Martin.

Produced by Helen Shaw, it was an Athena Media production for RTÉ.

The awards celebrate radio programming from radio stations, networks and independent producers around the world, and will be presented on Monday, June 18th, at a ceremony in New York.

In the series Martin narrated the fall of the Soviet Union and the birth of modern Russia. He spoke to former colleagues, friends and sources, as well as ordinary Russian citizens and Irish people working in Moscow.

Each programme explored the historical events which shaped modern Russia from Mikhail Gorbachev’s leadership to the coup d’etat in August 1991, and its aftermath

The series is currently being repeated on Tuesdays at 6pm on RTÉ Choice.

Martin has also written extensively for The Irish Times on the 20th anniversary.
