Stockholm - The Swedish government is to pay for a new translation of the Qur'an, the culture ministry said yesterday.

"Islam is the biggest religious minority in Sweden, so it is natural for the Qur'an to be available in modern Swedish," it said in a statement.

The government has agreed to pay a local publisher, Proprius, 300,000 crowns (£27,000) for the translation and publication of a new Koran edition. Sweden's National Coordinating Committee for the European Year against Racism is also supporting the project with a grant of 150,000 crowns.
