The Department of Foreign Affairs has advised the public against travelling to Jamaica at present after seven people were killed in violent street clashes.

A Department spokeswoman said between 30 and 50 Irish people were in the country. However, none was reported to have been injured in riots on Thursday triggered by a government tax increase on petrol.

The spokeswoman said no Irish people were in any direct danger.
