Police in Pakistan are hunting a former British public schoolboy they believe is responsible for the kidnapping of US journalist Daniel Pearl.
London-born Omar Sheikh (27) was named by the US State Department as a key figure in the kidnapping.
They believe Mr Pearl (38) had gone to meet Sheikh when he was abducted.
Three of Sheikh's associates have been detained in Pakistan.
Sheikh was arrested in India eight years ago for the kidnapping of three British tourists by a Kashmiri separatist group.
He was freed in 1999 in exchange for hostages on an Indian Airlines flight which was hijacked en route to Afghanistan by terrorists loyal to Osama bin Laden.
Bespectacled Sheikh is a former pupil at Forest School in Snaresbrook, east London, where England cricket captain Nasser Hussain also studied.
The son of a Pakistani clothing merchant, he was a prefect who enjoyed chess and went on to study at the London School of Economics.
He is thought to have become an extremist after visiting Bosnia to work for a relief charity during a summer break from university.
