Public `hanging' of rebel cancelled

The dramatisation of a public hanging in Lisburn town centre this afternoon has been called off after public protests. The stunt was planned as a finale to the local council's 1798 Rebellion pageant in which the hanging of leading United Irishman, Henry Munroe, in Market Square was to have been re-enacted.

There were plans to erect a gallows in the square and following the "execution" the head of a mummy was to have been produced as proof that Munroe was dead.

The council issued a warning that the stunt would not be suitable viewing for children or those with a nervous disposition. Following complaints a mock court martial will be held and the crowd will simply be told of Munroe's fate.
