PSNI seize drugs worth €567,000

Drugs worth £500,000 (€567,000) have been seized in Co Antrim, police said last night.

Drugs worth £500,000 (€567,000) have been seized in Co Antrim, police said last night.

The haul of 100,000 BZP pills was found in a storage facility in Ballymena, close to the town’s showgrounds.

BZP, which replicates the effects of drugs like ecstasy, is legal but the Home Office announced last week it would be banned by the end of the year. Two people have died in the last year in England as a result of taking BZPs.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said no arrests were made during the seizure, which was the result of intelligence operation.

An Organised Crime Branch spokesman said: “These drugs are legal but they are anything but safe, they are potentially lethal particularly where young people are concerned.

“We are delighted to have taken these out of circulation.”
