A police officer was treated in hospital for a head injury after being attacked in Strabane, Co Tyrone, last night.

A police officer was treated in hospital for a head injury after being attacked in Strabane, Co Tyrone, last night.

A police spokesman said the officer was hit in the forehead with a bottle after trying to apprehend two men who ran off when their car was stopped by a police patrol on Main Street at around 9.00 p.m.

A number of items were recovered but there were no arrests, the spokesman said.

Elsewhere, police in Portadown are investigating a shooting incident this morning. A spokesman said a man wearing a balaclava jumped out of a white car at Ballyorn Drive at around 1.00 a.m. and confronted another man.

The attacker fired four or five shots from a handgun, but his intended victim ran off.

The target, who is believed to have escaped injury, has yet to contact police, who have appealed for witnesses.
