Police in Belfast are investigating an incident in the city last night in which a man was seriously injured in a machete attack.

The man was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries following the attack which happened in the south of the city shortly after 2am.

The assault happened in the Glenmackin Street area of the city. Later, they were told that a man brandishing a machete was seen in the nearby Sandy Row area.

Investigating officers have urged anyone with information on him to alert police.

In a separate incident, a 62-year-old woman escaped after being threatened by a man armed with a knife in east Belfast. She was approached in the grounds of Stormont estate at around 1am today, but managed to get away, unhurt but badly shaken.
