Pakistani police fired tear gas today to disperse hundreds of students protesting the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in European newspapers.

The students entered Islamabad's diplomatic enclave but were driven back after they had approached the Indian and British High Commissions and smashed windows of cars and a bank.

Most of the students then ran out of the district.
