More than 100 protesters disrupted attempts by Esat Digifone to begin work on the erection of a mast at Kerry Keel Garda station in Co Donegal yesterday. In the interests of safety, attempts to bring a crane onto the site were postponed.

The protest has caused a political dispute in the area, with the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Dr McDaid, backing erection of the mast for the sake of industry and investment.

However, Mr Harry Blaney TD has expressed concern that there could be health risks from such installations.

Gardai denied adopting a heavy-handed approach during the stand-off.
