Berlin - The UN war crimes prosecutor, Ms Carla del Ponte, criticised NATO led peacekeepers in the former Yugoslavia yesterday for failing to arrest and hand over leading war crimes suspects.

Ms Del Ponte told Germany's Welt am Sonntag she was most angry that former Bosnian Serb leader, Mr Radovan Karadzic, suspected of orchestrating a 1990s campaign of ethnic cleansing, had escaped the clutches of the Sfor peacekeeping force stationed in Bosnia.

She was also critical of the Yugoslav President, Mr Vojislav Kostunica, who swept to power last autumn, for failing to co-operate with the UN war crimes tribunal in the The Hague.
