Permission has been granted for the construction of a private €60 million hospital in Ennis that its backers say will create 700 jobs.

Ennis Town Council gave the go-ahead yesterday to the 97-bed hospital within the 19th-century protected structure that housed the former Our Lady’s Psychiatric Hospital on the northern outskirts of Ennis, Co Clare.

Applicant Duesbury states that the hospital would create 100 construction jobs and 600 jobs when operational. A spokesman for the firm said discussions were continuing with potential investors in the project.

The planned hospital comprises a “full care hospital providing all medical services and ancillary accommodation to include 97 full in-patient beds”.
