Professor John Hegarty was today elected

Professor John Hegarty was today elected

as the 43rd Provost of Trinity College.

He will take over from the current Provost Dr Thomas Mitchell on August 1st, this year.

Professor Hegarty, Dean of Research at the Department of Physics becameProvost elect after a BALLOT OF Trinity College staff and students.

The Provostship runs for a term of ten years, during which the Provost is responsible for leading the College in its educational activities and infrastructural development.

Speaking after the announcement, Professor Hegarty said: "I am deeply honoured and delighted to be declared Provost elect and look forward to working with all members of the College community, affiliated institutions, colleagues in the other third level institutions, the government and a whole range of otherimportant bodies and individuals to ensure that third level education continues to receive the priority it requires."

"Universities as autonomous institutions are uniquely placed to offer a critical and independent perspective and therefore have a central role to play in relation to social, cultural and economic development, whether in Ireland or elsewhere. I will encourage innovation in teaching since our students must be our top priority.

"I will continue to support all measures designed to increase the proportion of able students in Trinity from under-represented groups. I will also further promote excellence in research as well as service to the wider national and international community", he continued.

"An inclusive approach is the only way in which we can maintain and develop a truly well-motivated, innovative and high-achieving community of scholars that will continue to attract the best students, enable us to retain the best in our traditions and enhance further our national and international reputation", concluded Professor Hegarty.

  • Postdoctoral fellow: University of Wisconsin-Madison (1977-80)Research Scientist: Bell Laboratories inNew Jersey (1980-86).
  • Professor: Laser Physics at TCD(1986-present) and was departmental Head (1992-95).
  • Adjunct Professor: University of Georgia USA (1990-1995) Visiting Professor: University of Tokyo andSony Corporation Japan (1995).
  • Established Optronics Ireland in 1989.
  • He has produced over 140publications in peer-reviewed journals.
