Gardaí have begun an investigation into a knife attack on an inmate in Dublin's Mountjoy Prison.

The man (22) - who is understood to be from Dublin - was attacked by several other prisoners at around 9am in the B1 section of the prison.

He was stabbed a number of times in the legs and is being treated in the Mater hospital.

A second prisoner suffered minor injuries in the attack. It is believed the victim was serving a six-year sentence for robbery and was due for release in 2009.
