A prison van carrying two inmates got stuck under a bridge in Co Offaly today.
The van was travelling from Edenderry courthouse back to the Midlands Prison when it got wedged at Derrycorris shortly before 3pm.
Air had to be released from the tyres before it could be freed.
A spokesman for the Irish Prison Service said: “There was a prison van involved in a minor incident in the midlands area. The governor (of the Prison Service Escort Corps) is investigating the circumstances.”
Offaly County Council confirmed it was also examining if warning signage is adequate for high vehicles using the 2.9m aqueduct on the Edenderry and Rathangan road under the Grand Canal.
Senior engineer Charlie McCarthy said: “We are looking at the signage down there at the moment but there are signs on it indicating a bridge height restriction. It’s the first time I’m aware of anything happening there. I don’t understand it.”
AA Roadwatch said the road reopened at about 3.30pm.
