Gardai are believed to looking to question a number of people who may have been involved in an attack in which a Dublin teenager was stabbed to death.

Alan Higgens (17) of Donnahies in Donaghmede, was stabbed near a cinema complex in the Coolock area of Dublin at around 11 p.m. on Saturday night.

He died in hospital shortly after the attack in which his mobile telephone was stolen.

Teachers today paid tribute to Alan who overcame a battle against leukaemia as a child.

Headmaster Mr Stephen Jordan described him as a "fine young man" with "a great zest for life". He said Alan was one of the first to volunteer for anything, and had a particular interest in drama and the arts.

A former teacher of Alan described him as a "gorgeous, most inoffensive kid" who would "never raise his voice or say boo to anyone".

She said: "I was Alan's teacher when he was five years' old and he started in primary school. And at that stage he was in early remission, he had had leukaemia as a baby, and they just didn't know if he was going to live or not.

Prayers were said at weekend masses at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Donaghmede, with the congregation told of the futile manner in which Alan met his death.

Gardai today appealed for anybody who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. They said there were up to 400 people leaving the UCI cinema at the time.
