A post mortem will be carried out this morning on the body of a young man who collapsed and died in Ballina early yesterday, writes Uinsionn Mac Dubhghaill in Galway.

Local gardai believe Mr Michael Devanney (20), from Bunree Road in the town, may have been sniffing from a drum of bottled gas in a vacant factory when he collapsed at about 2a.m. He was with two other men in their 20s, and a young woman.

Gardai, who went to the factory following a report of suspicious activity, arrived to find Mr Devanney being supported by two of his companions.

Local gardai said the young man came from a respectable background.
