The result of a post-mortem on a 68-year-old widow who was found at the foot of the stairs in a pool of blood at her home in Dublin early yesterday was postponed pending further tests by the assistant State pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy.

Dr Cassidy is expected to complete her forensic examinations today when the cause of Ms Josephine McSharry's death will be determined. Ms McSharry, who lived at Donore Terrace, off the South Circular Road, was taken to St James's Hospital in a fire brigade ambulance following an emergency phone call.

The ambulance crew contacted the Garda on arrival at her home. She died at the hospital a short time later. The scene at her home is being preserved until the postmortem has been completed. Detectives from Kevin Street Garda station were keeping an open mind about the cause of death, a spokesman said.
