Vatican City - Pope John Paul II cancelled all meetings scheduled for yesterday after falling ill with influenza, his spokesman, Dr Joaquin Navarro, said.

The Vatican had refused to comment on Monday on a report in Newsweek which said he would soon no longer be well enough to preside at public Masses.
