Abidjan - Tension was growing in Ivory Coast yesterday after the country's military leader, Gen Robert Guei, declared a state of emergency ahead of tomorrow's referendum and warned his opponents not to undermine the vote on a draft constitution.

Without giving details of the new measures, the ruling junta said "a declaration of a state of emergency" would be in force across most of the country until Tuesday..
