Politician's status changes and not a word is uttered

LIFE has definitely changed for Maire Geoghegan-Quinn

LIFE has definitely changed for Maire Geoghegan-Quinn. Her status as an ex-politician was confirmed when she appeared before the press at RTE yesterday, on the strict condition that she was not going to utter a word. She was there solely to have her picture taken.

The occasion was the announcement that she was going to host Liveline for a week from next Monday, while Marian Finucane is on leave. Photographers were assembled to record the proof - Maire and Marian together in the studio.

A request from The Irish Times photographer that a picture be taken in the open air caused consternation. Eventually it was agreed, provided that not a solitary question was addressed to the former minister and scourge of the present Minister for Health. Three RTE personnel were on hand to ensure that the fledgling radio presenter's tranquillity was not disturbed by a press query.

So how will she be able to handle the hurly-burly of grievances, questions and complaints from those who ring up Liveline? All the calls are monitored this reporter was assured, and she will be well protected. Evidently.
