Police fired tear gas today at a crowd of protesters marching towards the centre of Genoa during a third day of protests in the Mediterranean city hosting a big power summit.

Several hundred riot police with shields and backed by two dozen vans blocked a road leading to a large square adjacent to the high-security red zone where Group of Eight leaders were holding a second day of summit talks.

About 2,000 demonstrators broke off from the main cortege of some 50,000 people and advanced towards the phalanx of riot police, who fired several rounds of tear gas to prevent the protesters from entering the road leading to Piazza della Vittoria.

The main body of marchers proceeded peacefully up a nearby street which was part of the authorised route.
