BRUSSELS - Belgian police yesterday called off a nationwide alert after the suspected abduction of two children turned out to be a false alarm. Belgian radio had earlier said the children, who were not named, were picked up by a Mercedes van with a German number plate on Sunday.

But it later said the car belonged to the German parents of the children and that the parents - visiting Belgium for the Easter holiday - had dragged the children into the car because they wanted to keep on playing.
