Indie darlings, the Pixies will play their only Irish date in the Phoenix Park on Saturday June 12th as support to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it was announced this afternoon.

The Boston band officially confirmed they are to reunite for a summer tour at a California press conference today.

The Pixies, who broke up in 1993 after a string of critically acclaimed albums, had already been announced as one of the acts at this year's Coachella festival in California.

"For a long time, it was far from certain that this would actually happen. However, you may be interested to learn that, at last, the reunion has been confirmed,"  a spokesman said today.

"The band are holding a press conference in Los Angeles today, and their booking agents have been confirming shows with promoters over the last few days."

The band are also expected to play some warm-up shows in Canada and are also thought to have a number of indoor shows pencilled in.

The band's label, 4AD, are also set to release a new 'Best of' album and DVD later this year. The 'Best of" follows on from the 1997 compilation, 'Death To The Pixies'.

The DVD will feature eight Pixies videos, a 1988 concert recorded at London's Town And Country Club and the Pixies documentary 'Gouge', which features interviews with Radiohead's Thom Yorke, David Bowie and Bono, as well as behind the scenes footage from on tour and in the studio.
