A pipe bomb has been defused after being thrown at a house in Co Tyrone, police said today.

The device was found in the rear yard of the house at Smith Street, Moneymore last night.

The alert was raised shortly after 10.30pm when police received reports of suspicious activity around the house.

An army bomb disposal officer made the device safe at the scene and it was taken away for examination.

A PSNI spokesman said they were investigating a motive for the attack.

Meanwhile in Co Derry a five-hour security operation was mounted when what police called “a crude device” was found outside a house in Tobermore.

The alarm was raised shortly after 7.30am when it was spotted outside a vacant property on Main Street forcing the evacuation of a number of homes in the immediate vicinity.

The street was closed until noon while a bomb disposal expert dealt with what was eventually declared an elaborate hoax.
