James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan was due to marry today in a secret service in Ballytubber Abbey in Mayo.

The 49-year-old star's wedding to girlfriend Ms Keely Shay Smith has twice been put on hold once when his 17-year-old son suffered spinal injuries in a car crash.

But it should be third time lucky today for the current 007 star as the couple tie the knot in Ballytubber Abbey, which has been specially soundproofed to keep the ceremony private.

Around 100 guests will attend a lavish reception in the nearby Ashford Castle.

An intense security operation has been mounted to keep media at bay because the couple have signed a deal with Hello! magazine for exclusive wedding pictures in exchange, it is reported, for nearly IR£1 million.

Helicopters were due to be on standby outside the castle to whisk photographs to London for immediate publication.

With castle staff signing confidentiality agreements, few details of the celebrations are known, but it is understood that The Chieftains will play after the meal.

The couple, who have two young children, were giving away few details of the nuptials and the honeymoon destination also remains a secret.

Brosnan visited Ashford Castle with his late wife Ms Cassandra Harris and also filmed one episode of his Remington Steel TV show there.

Limerick priest and Brosnan's friend Monsignor John Fleming, rector of the Pontifical Irish College in Rome, will perform the wedding ceremony.

The two men met while Brosnan was filming the Bond film The World Is Not Enough.
