Only 10 per cent of the State's 21,422 pensioners living alone have availed of a new Department of Social Welfare offer of free telephone rental, according to the community group Muintir na Tire.
The group has called for more pensioners to take up the offer which includes a reduced connection rate and 20 call units free every two months.
