A man who was hit by a car over St Patrick's weekend has died in a Dublin hospital.

A man who was hit by a car over St Patrick's weekend has died in a Dublin hospital.

Gardaí said today Niall Higgins (18) from Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim, died in Beaumont Hospital last Saturday.

He was knocked down on the R280 at Ballynamony, Carrick on Shannon at around 3.00am on March 18th.

Elsewhere, a woman who involved in a road crash yesterday morning has died at University College Hospital, Galway.

The woman (81), who has not been named, was a front-seat passenger in a car that collided with a van at Lydican near Claregalway just before 9am.

The driver of the car and the front seat passenger of the van were taken to the same hospital for treatment. Their injuries are described as not life threatening.

Gardaí today named the man who died in hospital last Friday after a crash on St Patrick's Day as Gerald Corcoran (77) from Farranfore, Co Kerry.

The woman who died in a crash on the M50 last Friday was named today as Louise Blacoe (20) from Firhouse, Dublin 24.
