Republicans were blamed for the killing of Mr Andy Kearney (33) who bled to death after a punishment attack in north Belfast. His mother Mrs Maureen Kearney believes her son was killed by "people who claim to be Provos".

The general secretary of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation, Mr Joe O'Toole, confirmed he would serve a new pay claim on behalf of 20,000 teachers once the Garda pay dispute was resolved.

Meanwhile PDFORRA, which represents non-commissioned officers and other ranks in the Defence Forces, said it would hold a "week-long press conference" outside the Defence Forces HQ over the closure of barracks and other issues, including lack of progress in pay talks.

The Northern Ireland First Minister, Mr David Trimble, signalled that he was not prepared to sit in government with Sinn Fein because he was not convinced of its commitment to non-violence. The Ulster Unionist Party leader told MPs at Westminster he had no confidence in the commitment of Sinn Fein to non-violence and to exclusively peaceful means.

In Co Kildare, two building workers were killed when a trench collapsed in a housing estate in Ballymany, Newbridge. They were Mr Sean Treacy, The Heath, Portlaoise, Co Laois, and Mr Robert Dunne, Coilldubh, Robertstown, Co Kildare.

A report by the Working Group on the Courts Commission revealed plans to set up a US-style drug court in the Dublin District Court. The drug court system, which sentences offenders to treatment rather than prison, is strongly endorsed in the report to the Minister for Justice.

The Minister for Defence, Mr Smith, announced that the State would appeal to the Supreme Court a High Court ruling awarding £50,575 to an Army private who suffers a 9 per cent hearing disability.

An angry Minister said on the basis of the judgment the total required to settle all outstanding hearing-loss claims could reach £1 billion.

The Mid Western Health Board confirmed it was investigating a suspected salmonella outbreak which affected more than 40 people at a wedding reception. Over the past month more than 240 people have been ill with food poisoning and 31 needed hospital treatment.

Five sharks went on display in a large purpose-built aquarium at Dingle Oceanworld. They were flown in special containers from Florida to Kerry Airport.

Former Taoiseach Mr Charles Haughey received summonses allegedly for obstructing and hindering the work of the McCracken tribunal. He will appear in the District Court on July 30th. He was not available at his home for comment.

Cabinet approval was given for radical legislation to bring Irish television into the digital age. The statute allows for the creation of up to 30 terrestrial digital channels and a range of telecommunication services, including data broadcasting and high-speed Internet services.

In soccer, St Patrick's Athletic earned a surprise scoreless draw playing away to Glasgow Celtic but Shelbourne suffered a 5-3 defeat by Rangers.

Sellafield was ordered to curb discharges into the Irish Sea to "close to zero" by the year 2020 or face closure, it was agreed at a European convention on marine pollution in Portugal.

Aer Lingus announced operating profits of £46.1 million. The airline also expects to report to the Government by the end of August on the need for a strategic alliance partner.

A High Court judge, Mr Justice Johnson, accused the Minister for Defence of attempting to "interfere with the running of the court".

He made the comment during an application by the State for an adjournment of a case being taken by a retired soldier who is seeking damages for hearing loss and tinnitus.
