Fine Gael is targeting an additional 30 seats in its general election campaign, in a bid to nearly double its Dáil representation.

The party holds 32 seats, but has identified a further 30 to focus on for electoral gains.

In Dublin, the party is targeting nine additional seats, in an area where the party's vote effectively collapsed in the 2002 election. These include two in Dún Laoghaire, where the party polled 29 per cent in the local elections, at the possible expense of Fianna Fáil and the Green Party.

Fine Gael is hoping to gain one seat from Fianna Fáil in Dublin North, with speculation Leinster MEP Maireád McGuinness may put her name forward.

The party will run two candidates in Dublin South East in a bid to take the only Fianna Fáil seat in that constituency, and will target Fianna Fáil seats in Dublin South Central, Dublin South West and Dublin North East.

It will target Liz O'Donnell's seat in Dublin South, with former TD Alan Shatter seen as a possible candidate, and pursue Dublin West and Mid-West.

In Leinster, the party will seek a seat in Longford Westmeath, where it has only one TD, at the expense of sitting Fianna Fáil TD Peter Kelly or Progressive Democrats TD Mae Sexton in Longford. It will also be hoping that Fergal Browne or Frank Feighan will gain a seat in Carlow Kilkenny from Fianna Fáil.

Strategists want to identify a high-profile "parachute" candidate for South Kildare, to try and retake the seat lost by Alan Dukes in 2002.

Fine Gael will target the seat of PD junior minister Tom Parlon in Laois/Offaly, to double its representation in the constituency, with former TD Charlie Flanagan a possible candidate.

In Wicklow, it will be running three candidates to try and take two seats, a gain of one seat at the expense of either Fianna Fáil or Mildred Fox (Independent).

Cavan/Monaghan is a target gain, at the expense of Independent TD Paudge Connolly, as is Sligo/North Leitrim.

In Donegal North East, Sen Joe McHugh will be hoping to take a seat, while in Mayo, Fine Gael will run four candidates with the aim of increasing its representation to three, on the hope of a strong performance due to party leader Enda Kenny, based in Castlebar.

Roscommon/South Leitrim is a target, but analysts believe they have a strong chance of taking a seat in Galway East from Independent Paddy McHugh.

Clare, where it has one TD, will be a target for an additional seat, as will both Limerick East and Limerick West.

In Tipperary North, the stronghold of former Fine Gael TD Michael Lowry, the party will be looking to gain one seat at the expense of Fianna Fáil.

In Cork, the party will be seeking an additional three seats, one each in Cork South West, Cork North West and Cork South Central, all at the expense of Fianna Fáil.

In Kerry South, the party hopes to take the third seat from Michael Healy-Rae, expected to stand in place of his father, Independent TD Jackie Healy-Rae.
