"I have given this matter serious consideration over the weekend and on balance and in the best interest of the party I have decided not to contest for the leadership on this occasion.
"I know many party members and in particular the members here in Laois/Offaly will be disappointed that I am not allowing my name go forward, however in reality nine months before a general election is not the time for such a contest.
"I will be honoured to accept the role of president of the party and I look forward to working closely with Michael, Liz and my fellow parliamentary party colleagues in increasing the number of seats we will hold in Dáil Éireann after the election. . ."
