Vatican City - Pope John Paul II expressed "great satisfaction" yesterday on learning that the governor of Missouri, Mr Darrell Mease, had commuted a death sentence, the Vatican spokesman said.

The Pope, who returned yesterday from a trip to Mexico and the US, had issued a strong appeal against the death sentence while he was in Saint Louis, Missouri.
