Pakistan deterrent in place, says army spokesman

Pakistan has no problems with its defence capability and its "deterrent" is in place, a military spokesman said today.

Pakistan has no problems with its defence capability and its "deterrent" is in place, a military spokesman said today.

Asked at a press conference about speculation Pakistan's nuclear installations were not ready Major General Rashid Qureshi replied: "We do not discuss operational aspects. We do not want the enemy to know how ready we are,"

"But its suffice to say that we have no problems and Pakistan can defend itself and has its deterrence in place."

The test of a nuclear-capable missile by India yesterday, was condemned by Pakistan as a threat to regional security, especially at a time of heightened tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi.

The nuclear rivals stand poised for war, with some 800,000 troops massed in battle formations along the border, following a December 13th attack on India's parliament.

New Delhi accuses Pakistan-based Islamic militants of carrying out the attack.

Gen Qureshi said international concern expressed at the missile test and support for Pakistan's calls for negotiations with India showed there was an international rejection of New Delhi's position in the stand-off.

He said the international community also rejected India's attempt to link Pakistani intelligence services with a gun attack outside the American Centre in Calcutta on Tuesday, in which four police were killed and 20 people injured.
