A Pakistani court today acquitted four men accused of planning and masterminding the 2008 suicide bomb attack on the five-star Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, one of their lawyers said.

"The court observed that the evidence and witnesses provided by prosecutors were insufficient to award any sentence to our clients," said Qazi Waqar Hussain, a lawyer.

"They accepted our request and acquitted all of them."

The four men were arrested after the attack that killed 55 people.

Six foreigners, including the Czech ambassador and three Americans, were among those killed when a bomber blew up his explosive-laden truck after failing to ram it through the hotel's front security gates on September 20th, 2008.

Pakistan forces have been fighting homegrown militants, who have links with al-Qaeda and wants to establish Taliban-style rule in the Muslim country, since Islamabad joined the US-led war on terror after the September 11th, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Thousands of Pakistanis have been killed in the violence, most in the northwest.
