An investigation is under way into serious pollution in Lough Derg, Co Clare.

A quantity of highly toxic paint thinner appears to have been released into a tributary of the river Shannon.

Officials from North Tipperary County Council, with the assistance of coast guard units from Valentia and Killoloe, are trying to identify the source of the pollution.

Locals reported strong chemical fumes coming from the area.
