Many consumers are unaware of the high price of using their mobile phone abroad, according to a survey published by the Irish telecom regulator.

The survey conducted by the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation and the British telecom regulator OFTEL found 43 per cent of consumers were unaware a call home from Britain can cost up to euro 1.90 per minute.

Only 15 per cent were satisfied with overall value for money when making calls abroad.

Telecom regulator Ms Etain Doyle said: "The best advice for travellers is to check with your network before you go in order to know exactly how much you will be charged for mobile calls".
