A senior Portadown Orangeman has "unreservedly" condemned the violent scenes following Sunday's Drumcree church parade in which 24 police officers and a number of civilians were injured.
The Deputy Master of Portadown District Lodge, Mr David Burrows, said local Orangemen were "devastated".
"The violence has completely undermined the efforts district officers have been making throughout the year to try and bring about a peaceful solution to the dispute and a full restoration of our civil liberties. The best way to ensure that this never happens again is for all parties to work to find a solution," he added.
Six men were in court yesterday charged in connection with the disturbances, four of whom were remanded in custody while the other two were released on bail.
On Monday night, a crowd of about 300 people gathered on Drumcree hill throwing fireworks over the security barrier.
Meanwhile, a Parades Commission's decision to restrict an Orange Order parade in south Belfast on July 12th has been criticised by Ballynafeigh lodge. The commission ruled that the march would not be allowed to go through the mainly nationalist Lower Ormeau Road. The lodge's district master, Mr Noel Liggett, said he was "disappointed but not surprised" by the decision.
"We have seen the way the commission has operated over the years. It has become indeed part of the problem by the way it has endorsed the residents' stance with regards to parades. This has given them a shield to hide behind and made the situation of moving it forward in a more positive manner more difficult to achieve."
Sinn Féin, meanwhile, has criticised another Parades Commission ruling giving the go-ahead to two Orange marches in Lurgan, Co Armagh, on July 12th and 13th. The party's MLA for the area, Dr Dara O'Hagan, said the decision was "deeply flawed".
"Both these marches will pass through a nationalist area, only serving to heighten tensions in the area. Once again we see the Orange Order being rewarded for its intransigence. They have consistently refused to engage in dialogue to resolve disputes around parades and yet the Parades Commission continues to allow them to partake in a coat-trailing exercise through a nationalist area."
The Northern Secretary, Dr John Reid, yesterday praised the PSNI's "courage and resilience on the streets of Belfast night after night as well as at Drumcree".
