Just over one in five of all Leaving Cert exam results appealed to the Department of Education have been upgraded, it was announced today.
Figures released by the Department today show that of 9,628 results appealed, there were 1,985 upgrades. A mere eight grades were revised downwards. A total of 380,000 grades were issued.
The Department said the appeals were undertaken in all cases where students disputed examiners' decisions. Each candidate's paper was fully remarked question-by-question by a different examiner to the one who originally marked the work.
Students had appealed their results in Irish, English, French, Mathematics, Home Economics, Classical Studies and the LCVP Links Modules.
As a result of the process, the work of seven assistant examiners was reviewed. A further 325 papers in Irish, English, French, Mathematics, Home Economics, Classical Studies and the LCVP Links Modules were upgraded as a result despite the fact that they had not been appealed.
