Oh me oh my: new bridge to commemorate late Joe Dolan

MEMBERS OF Westmeath County Council have unanimously agreed to name a new bridge in honour of the late Joe Dolan.

MEMBERS OF Westmeath County Council have unanimously agreed to name a new bridge in honour of the late Joe Dolan.

The bridge will be the council’s second public memorial to Dolan in Mullingar. In December 2008, they erected a statue in memory of the native Mullingar singer and entertainer in the town.

The Joe Dolan Memorial Bridge will be opened by council chairman Cllr Mick Dollard (pictured above on the new bridge with the singer’s brother, Ben Dolan) and Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey on September 6th.

Built at a cost of €12 million, the opening of the 540m bridge also marks the completion of the final leg of the Mullingar Western Bypass.

“It is a big tribute to the memory of the late Joe Dolan, who brought so much happiness to people and there is huge support for it,” he said.

Mr Dollard said the Dolan family were “delighted” the bridge would be named after Joe.
