UNITED STATES:BARACK OBAMA'S big national lead over Hillary Clinton has all but evaporated in the US presidential race, and both Democrats trail Republican John McCain, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released yesterday.
The poll showed that Mr Obama had only a statistically insignificant lead of 47 per cent to 44 per cent over Mrs Clinton, down sharply from a 14-point edge he held over her last month. The poll showed Mr McCain, the Republican nominee, benefiting from the lengthy campaign battle between the two Democrats. Mr McCain leads by 46 per cent to 40 per cent in a hypothetical match-up against Mr Obama in the November presidential poll.
That is a sharp turnaround from last month's poll, which showed that Mr Obama would beat Mr McCain 47 per cent to 40 per cent.
