A 167-year-old link between the Sacred Heart sisters and Roscrea in Co Tipperary will be broken next September.

The Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart have been to the forefront in education in the town since before the Famine but, due to dwindling numbers, the order has decided to move its remaining sisters in Roscrea to the society’s headquarters in Drumcondra, Dublin.

Spokesperson Sr Aideen Kinlen said they will be withdrawing from Roscrea later this summer, but will continue to act as trustees of the Sacred Heart primary school.
