US-based software firm Novell will press ahead with its plans to build its headquarters in Dublin despite announcing worldwide layoffs of close to 2,000 staff.

About 10 per cent of its 140 employees based in Dublin will be made redundant, but plans to build offices in central Dublin will not be affected.

Novell will cut around 19 per cent of its global workforce of about 6,000 and write off some assets as part of its restructuring.

The company has not indicated how many staff will be employed at its new offices. Despite having bought a site on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, there is no date yet for building to start.
