FOURTEEN people were detained in hospital in Scotland, three of them with serious injuries, after a holiday coach carrying a group from Northern Ireland plunged down an embankment.

One passenger lost an arm in the accident, near Balloch in Strathclyde. Police said the accident happened as the coach drove south along the A82 road with 51 passengers, most of them from Northern Ireland, after a tour of the Highlands. No other vehicle was involved.

A total of 49 people was taken to hospital. Six were detained in hospitals in Glasgow and Paisley and eight in Vale of Leven Hospital. The others were released to continue their journey to Stranraer.

Chief Supt Kenneth Mclnnes of Strathclyde police said the coach - owned by Highland Heritage - crossed the northbound carriageway and toppled on its side down a slight embankment into a field. Road conditions were good and not busy, he said. The driver of the coach, who was not seriously injured, had taken a breath test, which was negative, he added.
