Berlin - An East German who shot dead a border guard while trying to escape to West Berlin with his family in 1962 was spared jail yesterday, , receiving a one-year suspended sentence.

Rudolf Mueller (68), a businessman now living in the western state of Hesse, was convicted of manslaughter but escaped the five-year jail sentence for murder that prosecutors had demanded.
