No injuries after Amsterdam airport explosion

An explosion at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport forced an evacuation and delayed incoming flights, an airport spokeswoman said.

No one was injured following the blast in a toilet in the arrivals hall at around10.00 a.m. Irish time, but it caused a lot of smoke, she said. The cause of the explosion and the extent of damage was not immediately known.

A small fire also broke out in a sandwich shop in the shopping plaza around the same time as the explosion, but it was not clear if there was any link between the two.

Operations at the airport, Europe's fourth busiest, were expected to return to normal imminently, the spokeswoman added.

Arrivals were delayed following the evacuation of the arrivals halls, but departures on an upper level suffered little disruption, she said. Only one of three departure areas was affected. The railway station at the airport was also closed.

"There is a smell of smoke in the air and in places you can see it hanging," a Dutch radio reporter at the scene said. Some stranded passengers were taken to a nearby hotel.

The main highway running past the complex was closed as emergency services blocked a tunnel, Dutch news agency ANP said.
