A girl who claimed she was raped spent five hours in a Limerick Garda station before being taken home, as there was no doctor available to examine her. The 17-year-old went to Henry Street Garda station at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, claiming she was raped on Sunday evening in Denmark Street.

Gardai were unable to contact a doctor and she was taken home at 3 a.m. She had to wait for a doctor's surgery to open in the morning. It is understood she was subsequently examined and the allegation is being investigated.

Supt Tony Kenneally said an allegation of rape was made and that a doctor was unavailable. He confirmed that the gardai had difficulty in getting medical assistance and the matter was being pursued. He would not discuss the case in detail. The Mid-Western Health Board said the incident was a Garda matter and was being followed up.
