German authorities said an explosion at a department store in the city of Wiesbaden had injured at least nine people.

There are US soldiers stationed in Wiesbaden, a town that is the capital of the German state of Hesse on the Rhine River about 40 km (25 miles) west of Frankfurt.

Police said they did not know what had caused the blast, which happened around 4 p.m. (3 p.m. Irish time) on the second floor of the Karstadt department store.

One official said the possibility it was caused by a technical defect could not be ruled out.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said nine people had been hurt in the explosion and four suffering from serious injuries had been taken to hospital.
