A police officer in Northern Ireland was seriously hurt in a hit-and-run accident early today.

A police officer in Northern Ireland was seriously hurt in a hit-and-run accident early today.

The officer was mounting a vehicle checkpoint in Crossmaglen in south Armagh, not far from the border, when he was struck by a white Peugeot saloon car on the Blayney Road. It has been reported that the Peugeot had a southern registration.

Police appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Earlier yesterday, an elderly couple were killed in a crash in Co Down. The couple were driving along the Carrickmannon Road when their car collided with a van around 4.30pm.

The woman, who was a passenger in the car, died shortly after the accident. Her husband, who was 82, died despite receiving treatment in hospital.
